# Upload files from your device

Use this method when you have media files on your local machine that you want to bring into MK.IO. The upload creates a new asset and copies the files directly into your connected cloud storage (Azure or S3).

> **Info:** You need at least one storage account connected to your MK.IO project before uploading. See [Connect cloud storage](/mkio/getting-started/connect-cloud-storage).

## Supported file types

You can upload any of the following:

- **Video**: MP4, MOV, MXF, MKV, AVI, TS
- **Audio**: MP3, AAC, WAV
- **Subtitles / captions**: VTT, SRT, TTML
- **Images**: JPG, PNG (for thumbnails)

For production streaming, MP4 (H.264/AAC) is the most reliable source format for encoding jobs.

## Upload steps

### Go to Assets

Navigate to **Assets** in the left sidebar and click **+ Create Asset**.

### Select "From local files"

Choose the **From local files** option. A file picker and upload form appear.

### Select your files

Click to browse for files or drag and drop them into the upload area. You can select multiple files at once: they will all be added to the same asset.

### Configure the asset

- **Storage account**: Select the connected storage account where the files will be uploaded. Both Azure and S3 accounts appear here if connected.
- **Storage container**: The name of the container or folder that will be created in your cloud storage to hold these files. Use lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens.
- **Asset name**: A display name for this asset in MK.IO (for example, `interview-raw-2024`). This is what you will see in the Assets list.
- **Description** (optional): Notes about this content.

### Upload

Click **Upload**. MK.IO transfers the files to your cloud storage and creates the asset. Upload time depends on file size and your connection speed.

Once the upload completes, the asset appears in your **Assets** list. Open it to verify your files are listed under **Files on storage**.

## What to do next

- **Verify the upload**: See [Verify your assets](/mkio/how-to/content-management/verify-your-assets-in-mkio).
- **Encode for streaming**: Raw files need to be encoded into adaptive bitrate format before they can be published. See [Configure VOD transforms](/mkio/how-to/video-processing-encoding/configure-transformations).
- **Publish**: After encoding, add a streaming locator. See [Publish content for streaming](/mkio/how-to/content-delivery-publishing/stream-content).
