Cookies and browser storage

What docs.mediakind.com stores in your browser, what PostHog analytics and session recording collect, and how to change your choice.

Updated

docs.mediakind.com stores a small amount of information in your browser. Some of it is needed for the site to work. Analytics and session recording run only if you allow them, and you can change your choice at any time.

Change your choice

  1. Select Cookie settings at the end of any page.
  2. Turn Analytics or Session recording on or off.
  3. Select Confirm my choices.

When you turn analytics off, the site stops sending data to PostHog and deletes the cookies and browser storage that PostHog uses. Your choice applies to docs.mediakind.com only. Choices you make on other MediaKind websites do not apply here.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, the site treats it as Reject all, does not show the cookie banner, and does not let Cookie settings turn analytics on.

Strictly necessary storage

The site uses these items to work. They are always on.

Analytics

MediaKind uses PostHog to understand how people use the documentation, so that we can improve it. With analytics on, PostHog can record:

  • The pages you visit and how long you stay on them, except pages that need sign-in
  • What you type into search, and which results you select
  • When you open and close the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant
  • Your answers to Was this page helpful?
  • Clicks that have no effect, and how fast pages load
  • Your browser, operating system, screen size, language, and the site that linked you here
  • Campaign tags in the link that brought you here
  • Your IP address, which PostHog uses to estimate your location

Do not type personal or confidential information into search.

Was this page helpful? appears only while analytics is on, because its answers are sent to PostHog.

PostHog stores an anonymous identifier in your browser, so that it can recognize repeat visits. The site does not send your name, email address, or sign-in details to PostHog.

With analytics on, Algolia, the search provider, also receives which search results you select.

Name Type Purpose Duration Provider
ph_<project>_posthog Cookie Holds the anonymous identifier and session details. 1 year PostHog
ph_<project>_posthog Browser storage and session storage Holds the same details as the cookie. Until you clear it, or turn analytics off PostHog
ph_<project>_window_id Session storage Identifies the current browser tab within a visit. Until you close the tab PostHog
__ph_opt_in_out_<project> Browser storage Records that PostHog may run. Until you turn analytics off PostHog

In these names, <project> is the identifier of the MediaKind PostHog project.

Session recording

Session recording runs only if you allow it, and it needs analytics to be on. PostHog records how you use each page, such as scrolling, mouse movement, and clicks, so that we can see where the documentation is hard to use.

  • Recordings show page text and images, and messages the page writes to the browser console.
  • Text you type into fields is hidden.
  • Recordings list the network requests a page makes, with their timing and status, but not their contents. For requests to other sites, only the site name is kept.
  • The content of pages that need sign-in is not recorded.
  • The API reference request builder, including the requests you send and their responses, is not recorded.

When you search or ask the AI assistant, what you type is sent to Algolia to return results.

Search also stores these items in your browser, so that it can show your recent and saved searches, keep your conversations with the AI assistant, and return repeated searches faster. These items stay in your browser.

Name Type Purpose Duration Provider
__DOCSEARCH_RECENT_SEARCHES__… Browser storage Lists your recent searches. Until you clear it Algolia DocSearch
__DOCSEARCH_FAVORITE_SEARCHES__… Browser storage Lists searches you save. Until you clear it Algolia DocSearch
__DOCSEARCH_ASKAI_CONVERSATIONS__… Browser storage Keeps your conversations with the AI assistant. Until you clear it Algolia DocSearch
AlgoliaObjectQueryCache, algolia-client-js-… Browser storage Keeps recent search results. Until you clear it Algolia

Names ending in … continue with an identifier for the search index or search client.
